2007 Intervarsities

There was a very impressive turnout from UCDCC at this years Intervarsity Championship with 12 riders taking part in total; the largest turn out of all Universities competing and the largest number of UCD riders fielded at a single event in a number of years. The racing split between a time trial in the morning and a road race in the afternoon. All organised by Queens Univeristy Triathlon Club on the outskirts of Belfast.

Louise Moriarity won the ladies time trial and road race, and the overall title. After finishing the ladies race Louise then continued on to place well in the mens event, completing 2 extra laps! Niamh Stephens and Ingrid Owens also raced on the day, finishing 5th and 6th respectively, ensuring that UCD took the ladies team prize.

An eager but inexperienced men's team took to the road in the mens race, after Anthony Walsh dropped out sick, with 6 of the riders taking part in their first ever races. Gavin Haberlin rode a brilliant race against some good category 1 riders, and finished in 7th place. He is only just returning from injury, making this all the more impressive. Ben Curtis also deserves a special mention, finishing 14th overall in his first race. The team finished 3rd overall, but failed to pick up the colours prize against Trinity, who put in a very strong performance.

At the captains meeting after the race it was agreed that the Universities in Dublin (UCD, DCU and TCD) will jointly host next years race, most likely on a course in Wicklow. There is also to be some collaboration between all the universities to agree on an official format for the Intervarsities. Finally, it was confirmed that the Intervarisity Track Championships are due to be held by Queens on May 9th this year.
