Club History 2000/2001

The 2000/2001 committee saw Andrew O’Carroll take over the Captaincy from Dermot O’Dwyer, who took over as Secretary. Rachel Wisdom was elected as Junior Treasurer. The remainder of the committee consisted of David McQuaid, David Lane and Alan Lane.

David McQuaid was again awarded a Sports Scholarship, but due to the pressure of final year examinations, he had a much quieter season.

Only five Club riders took out racing licences with Cycling Ireland: Andrew O’Carroll, Timothy Ahern, David McQuaid, Alan Lane and David Lane. Club Vice-President, Maoilíosa Ó Dubhthaigh took out general membership in order to affiliate the Club according to Cycling Ireland rules.

Timothy Ahern joined the Club from Bray Wheelers. He arrived with an impressive cycling curriculum vitae as highlighted: twice Leinster Junior Road Race Champion, winner of a stage in the Junior Tour of Ireland and a bronze medalist in the National Junior 25 mile time-trial Championships. He also rode the 2000 Shay Elliott Classic Race as a member of the National Junior Squad. Not surprisingly, he was to make a big impact over the course of the season. His performances included a bronze medal in the Leinster Senior Time-Trial Championships as well as an equally impressive 10th place in the Under-23 National Road Race Championships. He also managed to win the B category in Klondyke Cup in Navan. Those performances led him to be selected for the Leinster Senior team to compete in Newry 3-Day, in which he rode powerfully.

Andrew O’Carroll and David Lane teamed up with Jim Maguire, Greg Connolly and Belfield lecturer Tony Brabazon for a Wicklow Sorrento - UCD team that heralded the Club’s first involvement in the prestigious Rás Tailteann. Despite the majority of the riders coming from the Bray based club, the team rode in UCD colours. David’s father, Eddie, drove the team car for the 1125 kilometres which saw the riders depart from Navan with stage finishes in Ballaghadereen, Portumna, Castleisland, Killorglin, Dungarvan, Skibbereen, Bunclody & Dublin. It was a great honour for the Club and both UCD riders rode exceptionally well against top opposition to ensure that they completed the 8-day international stage race.

Andrew O’Carroll rode consistently throughout the season and deservedly won the Rider of the Year award. David Lane captured the Club League Winner’s title for a record third successive year, while Dermot O’Dwyer was elected Mountainbiker of the Year. Rachel Wisdom won her second Ladies Achievement Award for her work on the committee.
