XC NPS Round 5: Ballycuggaran Woods

Round 5 took place last Saturday, 16th June at Ballycuggaran Woods outside Killaloe, County Clare. The even was organised by MBUL.

Unfortunately the wet weather during the week turned what would have been a fast course into a mud bath, which made for very challenging racing conditions. The circuit started with a long fire road climb, then a short section of fast singletrack before another steep and slippery climb that led into a singletrack section in the forest. In dry conditions this would have been very fast and flowy but due to the mud it was extremely difficult and running some of these sections seems to be the fastest approach. A number of difficult switchback descents and short kickers took the course out onto another section of fire road, this time downhill. A final downhill decent back to the start line had stood up to the wet weather well and gave a glimpse of how fast the earlier sections might have been in drier conditions.

Cait won the Elite Womens race again for UCD, while I took 6th place in Experts after long battle between Andreas Gercsenyc of Cycleways and Luke Manning of IMBRC. Full results here.
