CLUB HISTORY
General Background
The University College Dublin Cycling Club was founded in 1994 by Cormac Ó Dubhthaigh and his brother Maoilíosa, who was an executive member of the Athletic Union Council, U.C.D. sports governing body. They recognised the demand for a competitive cycling club within the college. A mission statement and constitution were drawn up – a copy of the later was accepted by the A.U.C. The Club received the backing of U.C.D.’s Director of Sport Dr. Tony O’Neill as well as financial assistance in the form of an A.U.C. grant.
It was decided that the direction the club should take was to encourage people to enjoy cycling and that the Club should cater for all facets of cycling, be it racing, mountainbiking – both competitive and non-competitive – and touring/leisure cycling. The Club would endeavour to compete at the highest level in the country, and to achieve this aim students would be encouraged to register with the Federation of Irish Cyclists and to participate in organised racing across the country.
